CrossFit Games 2009

“Our workouts are competitive events. The strength and value of CrossFit lies entirely within our domination of other athletes. This is a truth derived through competition, not debate.”

I’m having a hard time deciding where to begin on my amazing weekend. Here is Part 1: Crossfit Games

We arrived at the site on Thursday night and hung out a bit with the CFV peeps that were camping there.  The place looked like a carnival site of sorts with tents stretching across the place for a couple blocks. The workout areas were set with Pull up bars, racks, stacks of bumper plates and other various “torture” devices.

Friday was all Affiliate Team competition. Our first workout was the pullup/ overhead squat wod. Our score was in the 800’s with a solid amount of pullups from Katie and Luke and Brittney and Matt pulling in the OHS numbers.

Next we went on to do the Stadium WOD which I think had to be the toughest. With a 25 minute cap, may teams were not finishing mostly due to girls struggling on the wall ball heights. Judges were tough and not giving any leeway. I heard through the grapevine that some girls had to throw 100 balls to get 30 that counted. Thank God I wasn’t up there…that would have been me. The team finished this in just over 22 minutes. It was seriously crazy to watch, and those 30 deadlifts at the end were brutal!

We chilled out for a couple of hours, had some lunch and prepared for WOD 3, the hill run. I got to be a part of this WOD and am so honored that I did.

I ran the first leg of the relay and felt pretty good about it. My only regret is my fear of going downhill and should have remembered my friend Jim’s advice: “Just decide that it’s a good day to die on that hill, and then go for it.” Well, I just couldn’t pick up my feet and go, and went for the shuffle. I was happy to hear that I was in the middle of the pack. The rest of the team gained some ground but for our last lap my legs were freezing up and I slowed. Dave thought of getting behind me and pushing but was afraid we would be DQ’d. I wish I could have run that last lap faster. We finished at 13:41. The best time all day was 11:09 from CF Oregon. This put us in 66th overall. Obviously not the top 5, but for the first time out not a bad showing at all!

Hill

I think I’m either praying that the ground will suck me in or I see a gopher hole and I’m trying to decide if I can fit in it or not. Maybe I’m just trying to focus. Yeah, cuz I’m all BAD like that!

The individual competition was intense and brutal. 8 WODs in 2 days. Sorry, no pictures. :-( The human body amazes me every day.

I’m really looking forward to next year, not sure about competing but just the excitement and motivation is enough to keep bringing me back! If you are interested in Crossfit at all, try to get there next year. You won’t be disappointed.

I heard the founder of CF, Greg Glassman say “More. Bigger,” in response to being asked “what do you see for next year?”

Below are some random pictures from the weekend. I didn’t take as many as I thought I would, but here’s a sampling.

It was hot- Faith tries to cover up.

The Beer Pong tournament begins.
