Still Learning
I noticed that a lot of the stuff I have been reading about Cross Fit (sorry, I’m a bit obsessed right now) mentions the Zone Diet. It seems the diet plan of choice for serious Cross Fitt-ers. So, I’m not one to just sit back and say “ok”. I have to check it out! This morning, instead of cleaning my house, I read up on the Zone Diet. It really is the basic information I already knew with some tweaks. Dr. Sears believes a little less protein than GOOD carbs. If you’re plan is to build muscle I would think keeping the protein carb balance is important, but I do like the fact that he supports eating a lot of fruit. This is to replace refined sugar. No breads really. Just an occasional WW pita. I think there is a ZONE pasta. I like the idea of it. My plan is to basically keep doing what I have been. Add in more fruits and eliminate processed sugar. I know that is the main enemy for me. If I can satisfy my bread urges by allowing it every few days in the form of a WW pita or bagel, I think it will better help me to steer clear of the butter soaked french bread. MMMM Butter. I am really loving learning more about nutrition and applying it to real life. It is very freeing to be off the competition diet and trying to live everyday life in a healthy and smart manner. (Don’t read “I’m not competing again”).
If you have some time check out the zone diet website…one cool thing I found was this page that shares some findings about a few restaurants and gives good choices (if there are any) to order. Check it out.

Hey Martha,
I did the Zone diet about 5 years ago and it really really leaned me out but it was skinny and not healthy looking. I had Zero muscle but I’m sure its feasible to do and keep some muscle. Personally BFL was a better long term fit for me but you have have wine on the zone:)
Good luck girl.

I am not doing the Zone diet, per se. I like the BFL principles best, but have learned what foods make me gain and I like seeing other ways of thinking. Nice to change it up and see what works. I think changing the diet up is as important as changing the workouts up. You don;t have to tell me twice about the wine. I’m on my way to the store now.

Martha,
I absolutely LOVE The Zone. I did not do it to lose weight, so I can’t report back that I lose XX lbs. But I loved the principles. I felt like I was eating so much food. If I wanted pasta, I could eat it. But what sounds better..1/4 c pasta or 2 cups of broccoli? I was able to eat 11 blocks a day. At first, it seemd “complicated” figuring out the blocks, but then I never had to think about it again. I would eat oatmeal and egg whites for breakfast. A favorite snack of mine would be cottage cheese, pineapple, and almonds. And Another FAVORITE of mine was grapes, cheese, turkey, and almonds. YUM. Once I get back to where I need to be, I will probably follow The Zone.
